SolidEnergy is a startup founded in 2012 by Dr. Qichao Hu, it currently has 12 employees and has raised $4.5 million in venture capital.
After years of study, SolidEnergy made an important breakthrough in battery technology. The company has developed an ultra-thin metal anode with two times energy density than the graphite and silicon anodes used until now.
This innovation will allow for the production of smaller batteries with the same capacity as traditional ones. This could potentially double the battery life of your smartphone.
Using this technology, SolidEnergy will produce small battery modules for the Project Ara with the same performance as batteries in traditional smartphones.
“Our battery basically makes the Project Ara phone more practical. Right now, one of the major challenges with this phone is that the battery life is too short.” said Dr. Qichao Hu in a recent interview.
In 2016 Solid Energy and their partners will produce the first commercial version of the battery for smartphones and they also planning on bringing their technology to electric cars in 2017.
