Fonkraft is a new modular concept, created by an Austrian company.
“It began on the 10th of September, 2013. That day, a viral video took YouTube by storm. After watching it for the first time, I immediately sent a link to my friend and colleague Matt, a computer hardware engineer. That video was Phonebloks.
He then replied something along these lines: “Seb, this is awesome! I think it’s the future! We must take part!” I was hoping for this exact answer because I felt the same way. The idea, the concept and benefits of modular smartphones sunk into our souls as we both have computer hardware engineering backgrounds. The hardest part was to start and move off because we had to make something that didn’t exist at that time. Finding the right people for the project was not an easy task; not everybody was ready to invest time in something that a lot of people thought was just a gamble. So we teamed up with people that shared our vision to make modular smartphones a reality, and who were ready to invest themselves in this IT dream. That’s how Fonkraft Technologies was born.” tells Sebastian Mayer, founder of Fonkraft Technologies.
All the main components of the phone are modules and can be easily switched. Fonkraft starts with a base unit and can be upgraded in terms of a new screen, CPU, GPU, camera, battery and RAM simply by switching out individual components.
Back of every module have pins and mountings. Thanks to a patenting process mounting mechanism, modules are held very tightly, they will not be disconnected even under strong impact or fall.
The display is holding tight and can be removed only when a special button is being pushed on the frame. Under the display there is special slider which unblocks all the modules.
Fonkraft will be running Android Lollipop and will support LTE and other connectivity standarts: GMS/EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS.
It’s available in 4 pre-configured versions to meet the needs of the major niches.
The basic model is called Pilot, is a basic and budget-friendly option oriented for long battery life thanks to 2 battery module (3100 mAh + 1000 mAh). In standby, it can last up to 550 hours, with up to 30 hours of talktime. This configuration includes a 1.3 GHz dual core CPU, dual core GPU, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB internal storage, 8 MP rear camera and 2 MP front camera with a 5-inch HD display.
The second configuration is the Fonkraft Resolution with a 20 MP camera module with sophisticated optics and 64 GB of internal storage. This version is more expensive (199 $) but it’s definitely more powerful thanks to a quad core CPU (2,5 Ghz), quad core GPU, 2 Gb of RAM and a Full Hd display. The Resolution is equipped with only one battery module (2800 mAh).
The Fonkraft HiFi is for audiophile enthusiasts. It has a 192 kHz HiFi module made out of wood, and it guarantees an excellent sound. This configuration has the same price of the previous one, but is equipped with a 8 MP camera and a 2100 mAh battery.
The configuration Elements has all the modules so you can make Pilot, Resolution, or HiFi on your own.
The Fonkraft team is also working on other modules. A 2 Sim module, a 16 MP camera and an additional antenna module.
The full version of the official website is being developed. It will include a shop for new and used modules, also, manufactured by other companies. The Indiegogo campaign on the official website has been suspended due to not meeting Indiegogo Trust & Safety standards.
