Acer Revo Build, a tiny modular mini PC

acer-revo-buildAt the IFA 2015 in Berlin, Acer announced a mini desktop PC with modular components.

In this way users can add and take away modules as they want.

The Revo Build M1-601 is packaged in a tiny 1 liter chassis with a 125 x 125 mm footprint that takes up minimal space and can be placed almost anywhere.

During the last days, the official Twitter Project Ara account continues to be very active.

The team has shown the new logo and announced several bits of news. Project Ara will no longer use electropermanent magnets (EPM) to keep the modules attached to the endoskeleton.

An electropermanent magnet can be switched on and off electrically and it doesn’t require power to remain magnetized.

MODR is a modular mobile device case that allows users to customize their smartphones and tablets with new features and new expansion options. MODR Inc. has developed an interesting concept and now the company is trying to raise funds to develop the project.

For the moment, this case only supports smartphones produced by Samsung (Galaxy S4, S5, S6) and Apple (iPhone 6 and 6+). New smartphones and tablets could be supported in the future. (more…)

At Computex Taipei 2015, Pankaj Kedia, the head of Wearables at Qualcomm, revealed a collaboration with Blocks Wearables. Qualcomm is the world’s leading microprocessor provider in the smartphone and wearables market today.

The modular smartwatch will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor (quad-core ARM Cortex A7 CPUs) and will run the latest Android Lollipop OS. Blocks will be released in a crowdfunding campaign later this summer. (more…)

At Google I/O 2015, Rafa Camargo, Technical and Engineering Lead, showed off a fully functioning Ara prototype at the end of the ATAP keynote.

Google’s lead system engineer demonstrated just how easy it’s to create an Ara phone. He assembled the smartphone, added 2 speakers, the AP module (the Application processor with Soc)  and battery, before powering the device up. He turned it on and then added a camera module and took a picture of the audience! (more…)

Kien is a flexible and versatile modular audio system developed by a Dutch company. In Dutch, kien means sharp, clever, smart, intelligent. Kien, also, sounds like the English word keen, which has very similar meanings.

The Kien system consists of multiple audio modules: satellites and subwoofer(s). The satellites are battery-powered portable speakers with 12 hours of music playback, that can be used alone or you can wirelessly connect multiple modules. (more…)
